Cette exposition solo présente une importante installation vidéo et cinq nouvelles œuvres du jeune photographe et vidéaste/cinéaste de Montréal, Pascal Grandmaison. Surtout connu pour ses portraits empreints de recul, il explore dans son travail les liens entre l’économie de l’image – ses matériaux et ses conventions formelles et techniques – et les structures socioéconomiques qui régissent notre monde quotidien. Dans Le grand jour, l’artiste se penche encore sur les rouages du film et de la photographie, et sonde les tensions entre le réalisme des images captées et les codes abstraits qui fondent leur représentation. En particulier, les œuvres dans l’exposition sont liées à ses explorations de la temporalité et de la narration, tant du point de vue micro – le renversement du mouvement des gaz dans le tube fluorescent – que macro – l’histoire et l’expérience des idées utopiques qui informent l’architecture moderniste.

 

This solo exhibition features a major video installation and five new works by the young Montreal photographer and video artist / filmmaker Pascal Grandmaison. Best known for his coolly distanced portraits, Grandmaison’s work explores the connections between the economy of the image – its materials and its formal and technical conventions – and the social and economic structures that govern our everyday environment. In Le grand jour Grandmaison continues his interrogation of the mechanics of film and photography, exploring the tensions between the realism of the captured images and the abstract codes underlying their representation. In particular, the works in the exhibition are linked by the artist’s explorations of temporality and narrative, both on the micro level – the reversing movement of the gases in a fluorescent tube – and the macro – the history and experience of the utopian ideas that inform modernist architecture.
